Remembering Pope Francis
Ericka Wooten, Director of Culture and Values
The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina join our prayers with all those mourning the passing of Pope Francis.
He led the Catholic Church with humility and grace, challenging the faithful to remain committed to social justice, care for our world, and respect and love for those individuals living in the margins.
“His Lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will place thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” Matthew 25:23

Brief Mission Meditation

The passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, marks the end of a transformative era for the Catholic Church and the world. His papacy was characterized by a profound commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue. As the first Jesuit and Latin American pope, he brought a unique perspective to the Vatican, emphasizing humility and a deep concern for the marginalized.
Pope Francis’ encyclicals, particularly Laudato Si’, called for urgent action on climate change and underscored the moral imperative of caring for our common home. He was a vocal critic of unbridled capitalism and consumerism, advocating for economic systems that prioritize human dignity and the well-being of all people. His efforts to reform the Vatican’s financial systems and address the clerical abuse crisis reflected his dedication to transparency and accountability within the Church.
Pope Francis has often described the Church as a “field hospital,” emphasizing its mission to care for those who are wounded and suffering in the world. This metaphor highlights his vision of the Church as a place of mercy, healing, and compassion – the key values that also shape our work throughout the Sisters of Charity Health System. He calls for the Church to go out to the margins, meet people in their pain, and tend to their immediate spiritual and emotional needs before anything else—just as a field hospital would in times of crisis.
As the Church prepares for the election of a new pope, the world reflects on the enduring impact of Pope Francis’ teachings and actions. His vision of a Church that walks with the poor, the displaced, and the suffering remains a beacon for future leaders and faithful alike.
“Eternal rest grant to Francis, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed, by the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!”
