Foundation Holds Listening Session in Allendale County
March 25, 2010
Over 80 service providers and their clients, community leaders and other residents of Allendale County joined the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control today, March 24, to share their experiences, stories and solutions around poverty in their community.
“Often we may not know the struggles and opportunities that the underserved face each day,” said Tom Keith, president of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. “Today, we heard remarkable stories and ideas from the community members, the Foundation ultimately wants to reach. We were so touched the community’s willingness to join us and provide their voice for this listening session.”
Foundation representatives, joined by Representative Lonnie Hosey (district 91), spent the afternoon visiting residents at the Dale Apartments, a low-income housing complex. They met with residents to learn of their daily struggles living in poverty and ideas and suggestions they had to improve their community.
As part of its commitment to reduce poverty in South Carolina, the Foundation is visiting communities across the state to listen directly to the voices of individuals and families around issues that surround poverty. The Allendale Listening Session was the first of several listening sessions the Foundation will hold in select geographic regions across the state. Since its inception, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South has invested more than $1.4 million Allendale County.
