St. Martin de Porres Catholic School, a ministry of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, does more than offer a quality education, St. Martin de Porres Catholic School nurtures “Shining Stars.”
St. Martin de Porres Catholic School offers a Christ-centered atmosphere for Pre-K – Grade 6 students. For 80 years, the school has served primarily African American students from the Columbia area. Its vision is evangelization through education. Students are given opportunities to develop academically as well as spiritually.
“People don’t always realize that this place is an evangelization outreach effort,” Sr. Roberta Fulton, Principal of St. Martin de Porres Catholic School, said. “It’s not just a typical Catholic school. Most of our students aren’t Catholic, but from the very beginning of the school our mission has been to reach out to the community and give service in terms of having a presence of the Catholic Church.”
Through school service projects, students learn the value of service. St. Martin continues the legacy of being a beacon of hope in the community. The motto at St. Martin de Porres is, “Every Child Can Be A Shining Star,” and it is clear that the students truly embrace it.
The school has a history of working with not only the children, but the families of those in the community.
“A lot of our children come from single-parent households,” Sr. Fulton said. “But the parents want their kids to have a good education as well as good values. We are creating a spirit with the parents where they take and foster those values at home.”
Sr. Fulton has served this ministry for 11 years, but says its success wouldn’t have been possible without those before her.
“None of this would be possible without all the people who have planted seeds and helped us along the way,” Fulton said. “I believe we’re setting up success for the future, too, by expecting the best from the kids and inspiring them to want to learn and enjoy school.”
