Project Description

This year marks Senior Resources 50th anniversary of forming as a foundation and they are wanting to celebrate with all their clients, volunteers, employees, and community partners.

Since 1967, Senior Resources has been working towards improving life for senior citizens living in the Columbia area, and being a voice for the people that are often forgotten.

“A lot of times these seniors are homebound or not able to get around the community very well so they can’t really speak up for themselves or seek the services they need,” Bridget Winston, the Senior Resources Communications Coordinator, said.

“We will continue to talk about their needs and publicize their needs,” Winston said.

Senior Resources has grown in its years as an organization, adding on more programs to help the changing needs seniors experience within the community. Their Meals on Wheels program, which serves about 400 hot meals a day, has now expanded to also bring pet food to seniors who have a furry companion.

The Meals on Wheels program is available to senior citizens who meet specific criteria based on the level of their health, their living situation, their current family support, etc. Senior Resources’ team of over 300 volunteers delivers the meals five days a week.

Senior Resources also has programs for seniors who are retired, but still wanting to be involved with their community. One program is Foster Grandparents, a volunteer program that provides a one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, and support service to children in the community.

“Foster Grandparents go into local schools, daycare centers, and preschools, to mentor and tutor students. They go every day, and it has a big impact on the individual child and the classroom,” Winston said.

None of these programs for seniors would be possible without grants and donations provided by community partners like Sisters of Charity. “We really value these community partnerships,” Winston said. “We couldn’t serve our clients without the funding, but we know that these local organizations like Sisters of Charity that support us through their actions are sharing in our mission, and truly working with us to serve the neediest in our community.”
