Former Foundation Board Chairperson Passes Away
Juanita Washington Brown, who served on the Sisters of Charity Foundation Board since 1999, passed away Friday, April 28, 2006. A Charleston native, retired school teacher and retired chief executive officer of the American Development Corporation (ADCOR), Ms. Brown was very active in the community also serving on the boards of Brookgreen Gardens and the South Carolina Aquarium.
Friends and relatives of Ms. Brown are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 134 St. Phillip Street, Charleston, S.C. Friends may call at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Rosary service begins at 7:00 p.m. Arrangements by Harleston-Boags Funeral Home, Inc., located on 121 Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston, SC.
Ms. Brown's contributions to the Sisters of Charity Foundation will continue to show for many years to come.
Foundation Elects New President
The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina has elected John Boudreaux as president of the board of trustees. Founder of the Boudreaux Group, a firm specializing in architecture, interiors and planning, Mr. Boudreaux has been active in the community for over 30 years serving on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands, the United Way of the Midlands, the Council on Aging of the Midlands, the Babcock Center Foundation and the Clemson Advancement Foundation for Design and Building.
Other newly elected board officers include Kevin Hall, vice president; Dorothy Grillo, secretary and Dennis Dabney, treasurer.
Foundation Celebrates 10 Years
Monday, May 1, marked the ten-year anniversary of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina.
The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina was developed through a partnering decision in November 1995 to strategically position the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System's hospitals in a manner to enable them to be responsive to the major trends.
Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 1200 grants totaling more than $32 million to faith-based and non-profit organizations across South Carolina working to implement programs that address the root causes of poverty.
Foundation Meets with Congress
Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina Executive Director Tom Keith, Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina Assistant Executive Director and South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families Interim Executive Director Pat Littlejohn, Upstate Fatherhood Coalition Executive Director Kelly Walker and Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Director of Public Policy Robin Bachman spoke with staff in each South Carolina delegation office in Washington D.C. regarding the South Carolina Fatherhood Initiative on April 26, 2006.
The team visited Senator Graham and Senator DeMint's offices, as well as Congressman Barrett, Brown, Clyburn, Inglis, Spratt and Wilson's offices. They gave an update on the South Carolina Fatherhood Initiative and the Sisters of Charity Foundation's support for the Fatherhood Initiative. The team received full cooperation from Washington and will receive letters of support to submit with its federal request for funding. Additionally, the team continued conversations regarding 2007 appropriations.
The trip was successful and the future is promising.
