Meet Foundation Board Member Dee Dee Chewning

Ruth "Dee Dee" Chewning (pictured above) joined the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina's Board of Trustees in 2006.

After receiving her registered nurse diploma from Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing, in affiliation with Furman University, she started as a staff nurse at Newberry County Hospital, in Newberry, S.C. Dee Dee has worked as an obstetrics nurse, medical/surgical nurse and, most notably, school nurse for Lexington School District One for 17 years. Through her nursing career, Dee Dee believes she found her calling - providing health care for children. Dee Dee went on to work with Healthy Learners, a program that currently serves uninsured and underinsured school age children in seven school districts across the state by providing access to needed health care, as well as assistance with transportation to receive the care. She has been with this program, another ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, since its beginning in 1992, and most recently held the position of executive director before retiring and working as its expansion consultant.

Dee Dee is very active in the community and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including South Carolina's first inductee of the South Carolina Association of School Nurses Hall of Fame, Palmetto Gold Recipient for Excellence in Nursing and the Governor's Order of the Silver Crescent. She has served on the United Way Association of South Carolina Board, the Salkehatchie Healthy Communities Collaborative Advisory Committee, Healthy Schools/Healthy South Carolina Network Action Council and the Central Midlands Advisory Council for Safe Kids.

She and her husband Judge Richard Chewning have two adult children and three grandsons. A lifelong resident of Lexington County, Dee Dee enjoys the beach, reading, walking and spending time with her grandsons.
